Hampton School’s Senior Maths Team has earned a well‑deserved place in the semi‑finals of the prestigious Hans Woyda Maths Competition, following a confident 60–35 victory over Reigate Grammar School at the quarter-final stage.
Founded in 1979, the Hans Woyda Competition brings together 64 leading schools from London and the South East, challenging teams through a fast‑paced mix of individual, pair and team questions. The contest is renowned for rewarding both speed and accuracy, as pupils tackle demanding algebra, logic and mental arithmetic problems under significant time pressure.
This year’s Hampton team has demonstrated composure, determination and impressive mathematical flair throughout the tournament. Their strong performance in the group stage secured their place in the knockout rounds, where they continued their momentum with a win against St Olave’s Grammar School before their quarter final match.
Hampton’s Head of Maths Mr Nick Stebbings praised the team’s success, highlighting both their teamwork and their sharp problem‑solving abilities:
"Our senior mathematicians have risen superbly to every challenge. Their accuracy under pressure and collaborative approach have been key to reaching this stage of the competition. We are incredibly proud of their achievements so far."
The Hamptonians now prepare to face Sutton Grammar School in what will be their first semi‑final appearance since 2022. The team will be hoping to build on Hampton’s proud history in the competition: joint champions in 2016 after a dramatic dead heat with City of London, finalists again in 2017, and Southern Plate winners in 2019.
