World Book Day Fun

Published by St Margaret's Preparatory School, Calne on Wednesday 11th of March 2026

St Margaret’s Prep was transformed for World Book Day on Thursday 5 March, as much‑loved characters leapt straight from the pages of books and into our corridors and classrooms.

Children arrived in a wonderful array of colourful costumes – from an Oompa-Loompa and a Gruffalo to a Fantastic Mr Fox and even a Dragon — filling the school with laughter and excitement. Adding to the buzz, the main reception was home to a travelling book fair – where pupils eagerly searched for their next favourite read.

The whole school celebrated World Book Day with each class choosing an author and then dressing up as characters from those authors’ books. Nursery brought Julia Donaldson’s much‑loved stories to life, Reception jumped into the magical world of Fairy Tales. Year 1 dressed as Beatrix Potter characters, and Year 2 celebrated the Mr Men cartoonist Roger Hargreaves. Year 3 ventured into the realms of C. S. Lewis, with Year 4, who dressed as dragons and pirates from the world of Cressida Cowell. Year 5 loved turning themselves into characters from Roald Dahl stories, and Year 6 arrived to school in wizarding style with Harry Potter costumes inspired by J. K. Rowling. The school shared a wonderful assembly with children guess the authors and sharing their amazing costumes.

Other activities included a Masked Reader competition, and an inspiring author’s visit with Lindsey Cole to the school’s much-loved Book at Breakfast.

Mrs Talbot, Head of Reading said: It’s always a brilliantly book‑tastic week, with children and adults diving into stories together with heaps of enthusiasm and gusto. The real magic happens during DEAR, when everyone drops everything to read, sharing books they love and discovering new favourites thanks to their friends.”
