Oakham 1st XI Hockey team have taken home the Plate in a national hockey competition, beating schools from across the country. The U18 boys won the Plate Final after a tightly fought match against Millfield School. The competition, in its inaugural year, was held at the prestigious Cannock Hockey Club, as part of National Finals Week.
Oakham took the lead just seven minutes into the game when Jules Roper scored from a penalty corner. Millfield came back to equalise and despite Oakham pressing strongly, Millfield went into the break 2-1 up. Oakham were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and Oscar Bennison finished off a good move to square things up at 2-2. This didn't last for long as a Millfield player showed his strength to claim a hat trick. Oakham captain, Monty Jefferson, put his team back on level terms with only 10 minutes left. The score remained 3-3 at the end of play to take it to strokes. After four strokes each it was 4-4 but Oakham keeper Charlie Claisse saved Millfield's fifth. This left Oakham's Joseph Kendall needing to score to win the game which he duly did.
