Five Oakhamians qualify for English Schools Championships

Published by Oakham School on Friday 27th of June 2014

Athletes from Oakham School have ended another successful season on a high, with five pupils qualifying for the prestigious English Schools Championships.

Tyrese Johnson-Fisher (U15 Boys 100m), Sam Clarke (U17 Boys Hurdles), Leon Patel-Champion (U19 Boys Shot), Oriana Simmonds (U17 Girls Shot) and Toya Afolabi (U15 Boys Shot) will all be representing Leicestershire & Rutland next month.

The qualifying standards for this event, which will be held on 11 and 12 July in Birmingham, are incredibly hard but the reward is the chance to compete in one of the biggest school athletics events in the world.

'We wish our athletes well as they prepare to take on the best school-age athletes in the country,' says Assistant Director of Sport, James Clarke.

'We have had an incredibly strong season, thanks to our talented athletes and our excellent coaches,' says Iain Simpson, Director of Sport. 'The success began early on, with all of our teams making it through to the finals at the Achilles Schools' Relays in Oxford. Given that our U15 Boys 4 x 100m team won their event, and the U19 Girls 4 x 100m team placed second, our pupils are some of the fastest independent school athletes in the country.'
