Oakham School celebrates the longevity of the Queen’s reign with a special chapel service

Last week, Queen Elizabeth II became our longest-serving monarch, surpassing the 23,226 day record set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. In honour of this landmark event, Oakham School’s Chaplain, Revd Alex Aldous, devised an order of service for the use of schools across the country to celebrate the Queen’s extraordinary reign. The service reflects on Her Majesty’s enduring dedication to duty, throughout a period that has seen dramatic changes all over the world. The Queen has lived to see 18 different prime ministers, as well 15 presidents of the US and a whole host of other leaders from around the world. As well as celebrating the Queen in terms of the qualities she espouses, the service also uses elements from the Queen’s coronation service, and harks back to stories from Queen Victoria’s reign. Whilst Revd Aldous delivered the service to students at Oakham last week, other schools from across the country have been in touch with him to say they have already, or are planning, to use the service in the coming weeks.
