Hayden wins triathlon Gold and 7th place GB ranking

Published by Oakham School on Tuesday 29th of September 2015

A triathlete from Oakham School was part of the Gold winning East Midlands team at the Inter-Regional Championships (GB National Finals TS3 for 13-14 year-olds) held at Mallory Park. Hayden Greaves, aged 14 from Oakham, also placed an impressive 7th at this national event – placing him as one of the top triathletes for his age group in the country. Competing against 12 other regions from across Great Britain, Hayden was one of 3 athletes representing the East Midlands TS3 male team, having won his place after strong performances in the qualifying rounds. “It was my goal to just qualify for the event,” says Hayden “so I was really pleased to have come in first for the region as well being ranked 7th in GB for my age group.” After leaving the swim in 16th place, Hayden pulled himself up to 7th as a result of a strong first 1k on the bike. As drafting was allowed in the event, he was unable to catch the leading bike group. As a result he found himself ‘going it alone’ and having to hold off a strong group of eight athletes who were also working together behind him. He maintained his position with a strong run, to place 7th overall. Hayden has enjoyed an incredibly successful triathlon season; he won two of his East Midlands Series races and placed 2nd in another, resulting in an outstanding 2nd place for his age group. His plans are now to continue training over the winter, focusing on Cross Country, ready for his move into the next age category (Youth) next season.
