National composition success for Oakham Music scholar

Published by Oakham School on Monday 21st of March 2016

A Music scholar from Oakham School won a place in the final of a national composition competition, run by the MMA National Association of Music Teaching Professionals. Morgan Overton’s entry was one of only three compositions selected to be in the final, which took place in London on Tuesday. Morgan’s work was performed at a day of workshops for all of the competition entrants. Renowned composer Jonathan Willcocks, adjudicator for the competition, commented that “the standard of entries was incredibly high and compositions displayed great thought and variety”. Morgan had a ‘fabulous day’ and was delighted to place second overall, especially given the amount positive feedback his composition received. Morgan’s compositions have won him many accolades in the past – having won the Aldeburgh Music Britten Young Songwriter Competition twice in a row and the National Opera House Fanfare Competition in recent years, he was also invited to compose a new work for the professional Solem Quartet by the Director of the King’s Lynn Festival, which premièred in July 2015.
