Well done to Form 1 pupil Katie, who is a prize winner in the mixed media category at the Rutland Open Youth Art Exhibition. Pupils across Rutland were invited to take part in the competition, which covers a range of media including painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture. The mixed media theme was based on a few works by artist Wangechi Mutu, combining human facial features with animal skin patterns. Katie not only painted with card, brushes, spray paints and stencils but also used a collage effect. As Wangechi Mutu has an African background, Katie added African carvings and adornment details to the piece. “It is brilliant that Katie’s painting has been chosen as one of the winners, especially as the standard within the competition was so high,” says Teacher of Art Cathy Stephenson. “It is very creative and showcases her artistic skills. We look forward to seeing her talent progress further.” Katie’s artwork is on display in the Rutland County Museum and sits alongside works by other competitors and winners. The exhibition will run until 22 February.
