Salisbury Cathedral Evensong

Published by Monkton Senior School on Wednesday 23rd of November 2022

A big congratulations to the Chapel Choir who, on Wednesday 25th September, sung Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral. The almost 40-strong choir sang Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You, and Dyson’s Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in F, as well as the other musical elements of the service, accompanied by the cathedral’s world-famous organ.

After the service and much thanks from the clergy and congregation, the students and staff enjoyed an Italian meal out, before returning to school. Thank you to Mr Wilson-Lambert, Miss Virr, Mr Sidders and Miss Bartholomew for coming and singing too!

A select of pupils shared their experience in Principal's Assembly, read the following to find out more:

I would highly recommend chapel choir as it is a great opportunity to find your musical talent and to be part of something different whilst making new friends!
The Senior School Chapel Choir, made up of students from Years 10 to 13, had the privilege of going to sing evensong at Salisbury Cathedral.

We started off with a quick rehearsal in the Bowerman Hall, and then half the group took a bus to the train station for about an hour’s journey to Salisbury. The other half enjoyed a scenic minibus journey.

We then went straight into the cathedral when we arrived, which was massive. The organ was pretty big, only around 4000 pipes, so not too bad! Then we moved to the Quire area and had a really nice rehearsal accompanied by the organ and the Cathedral's organist, John Challenger.

The service itself was around 45 minutes long and we were accompanied by a member of the clergy who sang the prayers. We had a small congregation as well as friends and family who came to watch. It was an amazing experience to be a part of.

After the service we had a delicious meal out at Zizzis and enjoyed the pizza and pasta they had to offer. On full stomachs some of us then had to run to the station in fear of missing our train. We were quite tired at this point and enjoyed a quiet journey home. Whilst waiting for the mini bus at the station we sang some slightly out of tune hymns much to the dismay of Mr. Wilson-Lambert. Thankfully the bus arrived shortly after.

I would highly recommend chapel choir as it is a great opportunity to find your musical talent and to be part of something different whilst making new friends.

A huge thank you goes to Mr Wilson-Lambert, Miss Virr, Miss Bartholemew and Mr Sidders for their great singing and support. And of course, Mr Gooddy for conducting us, running the trip, and organising the awesome food we ate afterwards.
