> FACT 1:  JK Rowling attended Exeter University where she studied Greek and French. It is also said that she drew inspiration for parts of the Harry Potter novels whilst staying in the town. Gandy Street is rumoured to be the inspiration behind Diagon Alley, whilst Exeter Cathedral is supposedly the inspiration for the Great Hall at Hogwarts.

> FACT 3:   Exeter has a nighttime street food market, where independent retailers and restaurants line the centre streets providing late night goodies from a variety of countries such as Iran and Vietnam.

> FACT 4: Exeter offers incredible day trips to beautiful beaches. Dawlish Beach and Dawlish Warren beach is 8 minutes away by train whilst Exmouth Beach is a 30 minute drive but includes over two miles of golden sand and shimmering sea. 

> FACT 5:  Exeter has a network of underground passages. Their original use was to supply clean water to inhabitants in the 14th century and although they are no longer in use, you can take a tour through some of the restored tunnels and learn about their history.  

> FACT 6: Exeter was founded by the Romans who used it as the tribal capital of Domnonirums. Exeter was actually called Isca at the time, meaning flowing water. The name was in reference to the River Exe that runs through the city. 

> FACT 7:  Exeter was the last place for a woman to be trialled and executed for witchcraft. In 1682, Temperance Lloyd was reported by her neighbours for practising witchcraft, some of the accusations even included turning herself into a magpie!   

> FACT 8:   The Royal Clarence Hotel is the oldest hotel in Britain, it was first up and running in 1769 however some parts of the building such as the main entrance can be traced back to the early 16th century. 

> FACT 9:   Exeter cathedral, established in 1050, is one of the most famous tourist areas in Devon. Its Gothic architecture is renowned throughout the world for its intricacy and it’s even possible to go up onto the roof! 

> FACT 10:  Exeter has the oldest civic building in Britain, the Exeter Guildhall dates back to 1160.

>  Exeter To Plymouth:  Plymouth is about 54 miles by road from Exeter via the A38 and driving to the centre of Plymouth from Exeter normally takes under 1 hour.  There is a very regular train service to Plymouth from Exeter, with trains taking from 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes to get to Plymouth.
