Head PhotoHampshire Collegiate School (HCS) is a SHMIS and IAPS, co-educational school for boarders aged 11-18, and day pupils aged 2 - 18. HCS is set in its own secluded grounds on the outskirts of the small market town of Romsey near Southampton and is easily accessible by road, rail and air. A good academic and all round education is given, offering continuity from nursery to Sixth Form and enabling pupils to take GCSE, AS and A2 Level examinations according to their ability. The staff ratio of 1:9 and tutorial system ensure a close watch is kept on pupil progress. Cricket, rugby, hockey, rounders and netball are the main sports, although a wide range of other sports are available. Pupils are also encouraged to participate in an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities which includes the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. HCS has a wide ability range (100+ IQ), with some very bright, and some average pupils. The school has no further plans to become more selective at entry into the Prep and Senior Schools; it uses the yardstick of Cognitive Ability Tests, Yellis and Alis to evaluate its 'value-added'. In 2012 the GCSE pass rate A* - C was 89% and at A Level 71% achieved grades A*-C, while 98% of the Upper Sixth went on to university degree courses. The Senior School is housed in a grade II listed building(formerly the childhood home of Florence Nightingale). The Prep School and Nightingale Nursery occupies purpose-built facilities on the same site. All pupils benefit from the 130 acre campus that comprises playing fields,an astro-turf and tennis courts, and historic woodlands and gardens. HCS is a member of United Learning.
