Formula One commentator, Tom Clarkson, dines with Dean Close Sixth Formers

Dean Close School dining room atmosphere was revving with excitement when Sixth Form diners welcomed Formula One commentator, Tom Clarkson, as their guest of honour at a Francis Bacon Society dinner.

Tom works as part of the BBC television team as their pit-lane reporter and is also one of the editors for F1 Racing magazine. His first broadcast was in 2010 at the Korean qualifiers commentating for Radio 5 Live alongside David Croft.

A captivating and entertaining speaker, Tom told the pupils of how he had dropped out of university to follow his dream of being a journalist to write about cars. He was lucky to be asked to fill in for a presenter who was sent to work on another sport and proved himself enough to secure his present job interviewing in the pits. He disclosed that his interview took place in Bernie Ecclestones Playboy room which was an unusual place to be interviewed, he said! His final words were that his young audience should follow their dreams and their passions....

Organiser and House Mistress at Dean Close, Julie Kent, said: It is amazing that he managed to make time to come and be our guest since he is away 177 days a year travelling all over the world presenting Formula One for the BBC and Network 10 in Australia.
