Boarding Initiative of the year award
Ashville are celebrating winning the ‘Boarding Initiative of the Year’ award at the prestigious 2016 TES Independent School Awards.
The award recognises the Activities programme in place for our Boarding pupils, which provides them with a wealth of activities and entertainment.
The revamped activities programme was devised after an on-line questionnaire completed by boarders found just 60% considered the then provision to be either good or excellent. As a result, the boarding council - which includes pupils from each boarding house - met with Senior Housemaster Mr Coad, to look at how a new activities programme could be compiled.
Pupils said that they wanted weekend activities that gave them an insight into British culture, a chance to engage with the local community, a breadth and variety of activities, pushing pupils out of their comfort zone, team building opportunities, developments of leadership skills, the inclusion of day pupils, social events for Sixth Formers and above all else activities that were fun. The new programme includes organising charitable events and visits to museums, art galleries and walks in the Yorkshire Dales.
Team-building and leadership skills are developed through a series of inter-house competitions, including singing, cooking and netball. Day pupils have been invited in for specific “boarding in” weekends, enabling them to experience and enjoy life in the boarding houses. There has been a positive impact across the whole of the school. Boarders, in particular those from overseas, contribute more to school life, while day pupils have a greater appreciation and understanding of boarding and there has been an increase in flexi-boarders as a direct result.
Ashville found out the results of the awards when they attended a black-tie event in at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, hosted by comedian Simon Evans, where over 300 attendees celebrated all that is outstanding in independent schools across the UK.
Congratulations to all boarding staff involved in devising and running the boarding activities winning the award is a tremendous achievement for Ashville and a ringing endorsement of our fantastic boarding regime.Published: February 1 2017
