A Career in Engineering?

On Thursday 7 November, 14 Canford pupils with an interest in finding out more about career options in Engineering attended the Careers in Engineering evening held at Curtiss-Wright Aviation Engineering near Bournemouth Airport.

Representatives from 22 local engineering companies attended, from large international companies like Siemens and local engineering firms such as Cobham and Sunseeker. Pupils were able to find out more about work experience opportunities, degree apprenticeships and future careers and many took the option to sign up for these.

The event provided a fantastic insight into the range of Engineering options open to pupils seeking a career in this discipline and prompted Canfordians to feedback on how useful and interesting it had been.

Michael Doherty, Head of Careers, commented:

“While within school we talk to pupils about possible career options, and have many specialist staff who can offer advice based on their own particular disciplines, in terms of work plans and degree courses, there is no substitute for talking to those currently actually working within companies focused on those areas, in this case Engineering. At this event, it was a real opportunity to be able to speak directly to employees from some of the largest corporates in the industry, and it was fascinating to hear about how the businesses were structured, projects they were involved with and the exciting potential for work experience that was readily available. Our pupils came away with some excellent insights which I am sure will have helped them in their decision making over careers and future courses.”

Engineering is a popular degree course choice for Canfordians, with 69 pupils gaining places at university to read the subject in the past 5 years, including world class institutions such as Exeter, Bristol, and Imperial College, London.
