Alumni Spotlight - Nina

Published by St Nicholas' School on Friday 6th of October 2023

Congratulations to Alumni Nina R, on securing a prestigious place at Cambridge University.

After leaving St Nicholas’ in July 2021 with some extremely impressive GCSE results Nina went on to study A Levels at Peter Symonds in Winchester where she achieved A*A*A*A* B in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Japanese and French.

Nina has just started at Pembroke College where she is reading Physical Natural Sciences, but before she went off, we caught up with her and asked her a few questions.

What did you love about St Nicks?

I joined St Nicholas’ school in Nursery, so I have a lot of very happy memories but I think being able to make lifelong friends and having such dedicated and supportive teachers that you can speak to at any time and the school trips were so much fun!

What are you most looking forward to when you start university?

Starting a new life and meeting lots of new people.

How did you find the UCAS process for Cambridge?

My application to Pembroke consisted of the general UCAS application, a written exam (NSAA) and an interview. I liked that they considered every aspect of the application equally in making their decision, but it was a tough process and I was very nervous!

How did you find the interview?

I was nervous! I had an interview for the College with two professors. They asked me two questions regarding the topics I mentioned in my personal statement and two technical questions - a bit like problems you would see in a Physics exam.

Taster Day?

After receiving my conditional offer, I attended an Offer Holder Day, it was a great opportunity for me to meet other offer holders, and speak to some current students and staff.  Plus, I found out more about Uni life and made a few friends before I start.

What are your plans after University?

All I know is that while I am at university, I want to study Physics to a new depth.

Good luck Nina, we wish you all the best at Cambridge (and keep in touch).
