Brentwood School fields rugby trio in national team

Three Brentwood School rugby stars have been chosen to play for the England Independent Schools' U18 rugby team.
Upper Sixth students Conor Phillips (Hooker/Captain School 1st XV), Elliot Croft (Fly Half/Vice Captain School 1st XV) and Iain Stewart (prop), were selected after rigorous trials.
The selection process included regional run-outs at South East of England and South of England levels, then full National trials, before they were hand-picked to join an elite squad of 30 players in the England Independent Schools' U18s rugby team.
They played three home matches against the Irish Exiles, Crawshays' Welsh and the Boys' Clubs of Wales at Maidenhead RFC in February and March, before going on a week-long tour to Dublin and Belfast during half term to take on the best of the Irish teams, Leinster, Connacht and Ulster U18s.
In some fearsome bone-crunching confrontations against teams that fielded many boys who had won International Caps, the England U18 team played some spectacular rugby and won all of their matches against the Irish teams (including a clean sweep on tour), and six out of all their seven fixtures, going down narrowly to the Boys' Clubs of Wales.
The fact that Brentwood School contributed three of the 30 players to this England squad is testament to the development of rugby at the School in recent years.
Conor Phillips has been offered a two-year placement at the Natal Sharks Academy in Durban, South Africa starting in January. Coach Will Castleman said: 'We wish him, Elliott and Iain well with their future rugby careers. We are extremely proud of these three Brentwood boys, and we are watching with great anticipation to see how their rugby careers develop over the next few years.
'All three of these boys joined Brentwood School in 2006 and are also part of the Brentwood Schools 1st XV team that successfully won the Essex U18 Cup for the first time in the School's history.'
