Debating flair from local schools

Warwick School hosted for the fifth year running a Debating Workshop and Competition which was organised by the School and the English Speaking Union (ESU).

The workshop 'Discover Your Voice' run by the English Speaking Union teaches children basic debating skills in a fun and relaxed environment. The workshop covered critical thinking, listening and response and handling nerves. The workshop was then followed by a tense debating competition the following week in which six pupils from each school had the opportunity to battle wit and language flair against each other at Warwick School.

The Year Five and Year Six pupils were from Bishops Tachbrook School, Budbrooke Primary School, Coten End Primary School, Milverton School, Warwick Junior School and Wolverton School. Topics debated included abolishing the Monarchy, banning zoos and whether schools should have a school uniform.

All six schools debated at the competition for The Ben Marshall Debating Shield and were judged on the quality of their speeches and responses to points raised. After a nerve racking final, the winning school was Milverton School.

Ed Halse, Head Master of Warwick School said, 'We are delighted to hold this event which builds young people's confidence and improves their oral fluency. I am pleased that it attracted so many local schools. I offer my congratulations to all the children that took part and to their talented teachers for supporting them.'
