Renowned composer and scriptwriter Hannah Kohl, recently joined ACS Cobham as Artist in Residence for one week working with students developing their musical creativity.

Hannah is best known for her work as script supervisor for Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flahertys reworking of the movie classic, Rocky The Musical, which has recently opened on Broadway. She is currently working on a new project with Adrian Sutton, the composer behind War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Students worked alongside Hannah, who led a series of interactive workshops including Backyard to Broadway, where pupils learnt about the techniques of singer/songwriters and Broadway composers in order to create their own original theatre.

Middle School students also enjoyed The Fraction Philharmonic: Where Music Meets Maths workshop, where they explored beginners music theory and fractions through a combination of art, dance, music and maths. Lower School students also got to work with Hannah and were fascinated to hear how she has been commissioned to write the songs for a staging of Daniel Pinkwaters childrens book The Big Orange Splot. Hannah took the students through the process of song writing and ended the class with a finished Broadway-style song.

Hannah is also a gifted exponent of the art of Scherenschnitte or paper cutting and has recently been commissioned to make a birthday piece for Hollywood star, Shirley MacLaine. She took time out of this work to teach the art to kindergarten students and middle schoolers.

A former music teacher at an international school in Mexico, Hannah worked alongside ACS teachers to bring elements of musical theatre and arts into the everyday classroom.

Richard Harrold, Assistant Lower School Principal at ACS Cobham added:

Working with children of all ages exploring the techniques of lyricists and Broadway composers, Hannah has really helped the students develop their musicality and produce original pieces of drama. Students thoroughly enjoyed Hannahs time as Artist in Residence investigating all elements of the curriculum through music and song.
