'Gruffalo' Illustrator Axel Scheffler visits ACS Hillingdon

Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo, recently visited ACS Hillingdon Lower School students aged four to ten.

Born in Hamburg and moving to England 30 years ago to study illustration, award-winning illustrator Axel is perhaps best known for The Gruffalo, a collaboration with author Julia Donaldson. The Gruffalo has sold over five million copies worldwide and been translated into fifty languages. Axel has also illustrated many more books, including the Pip and Posy series, Noisy Farm and The Bedtime Bear.

During his visit, the students were able to gain an insight into his work as Axel read a story and demonstrated the illustration process. Sharing examples of the original text he receives from writer Julia Donaldson when a story is ready for illustration, Axel went through the process of choosing a layout and explained changes an illustration might undergo during the editing process. He also worked with students in three separate sessions, drawing a large version of one of his well-known characters.

Students were also able to take away signed and illustrated books as a special memento of Axels visit. Lower School Librarian, Peggy Travers, said: The signing was very special as Axel kindly drew a character in each book signed. Seeing him draw a huge Gruffalo during a session was also very special.
