Annual Masterclass was inspiring and memorable highlight

This years Harriet Tory Masterclass was an outstanding event, directed by Samuel Coles, Principal Flute of the Philharmonia Orchestra and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music.

Samuel worked with six of Sherborne Girls' advanced woodwind players and two ensembles, a Flute Quartet and a Clarinet Quartet. He proved to be a brilliant teacher, challenging the girls with a wealth of musical and technical ideas, and communicating these in such a vibrant way that had the audience as much on the edge of their seats as the players were on their toes. Bringing his baroque flute with him, Samuel also gave a fascinating account of the instruments development over several centuries and the differences between that and his modern (solid gold) flute. Accompanied by Ana Manero and Simon Clarkson, the girls were extremely impressive as they performed under a very public spotlight, determined to embrace the artistic and technical nuances to which Samuel introduced them.

John Jenkins, Director of Music at Sherborne Girls, said "The evening concert was an absolute joy, with all the afternoons participants taking to the platform once again to present a delightfully varied programme, and ending with Samuel Coless scintillating performance of Poulencs Flute Sonata with Ana Manero at the piano."

"It was a great pleasure once again to have Mr and Mrs Paul Tory with us, along with other family members and friends. This Masterclass was undoubtedly an inspiring and memorable highlight in the series, and Sherborne Girls musicians are enormously grateful that such wonderful educational opportunities are open to them, thanks to the generosity of the Harriet Tory Trust."
