Published Tuesday 12th of April 2011 03:56:13 PM

In early March, Harriet Hughes Year 11 was invited to the Houses of Parliament after writing a winning essay for the Parliamentary press Gallerys Write Now competition. Harriet was presented with her certificate at a reception by Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP where she was also officially congratulated for being the overall year 10-11 winner nationally.

Harriet commented I was excited as I didnt expect to win. I took part in the competition as I am interested in Politics and this is what I would like to study at university. By having the opportunity to go to Downing Street, the House of Commons and the House of Lords it helped me to realise my future ambitions.

Mr McCloskey added we were delighted with Harriets success in the competition. It is important that our girls embrace politics in an enquiring, discerning and pro-active manner. Harriet has demonstrated emphatically that young people can engage with politics in a positive manner.
