A group of 15 Hillingdon students recently returned from an inspiring five-day expedition to Dimcho Debelianov Orphanage in Silistra, Bulgaria. Now entering its sixth year, the partnership between the Dimcho Debeliano Orphanage and ACS Hillingdon is designed to help support the charity whilst providing students with an intercultural perspective. Throughout the year, the 16 to 18 year olds from ACS Hillingdon have been organising a programme of events to fundraise for improvements to the orphanage, which cares for 55 children, aged between 6 and 20 years old, including those with disabilities. Students also kept in touch with the orphanage residents through social media. A key part of this year’s visit saw the students decorate bedrooms and living spaces, and contribute towards English lessons with interactive games and fun activities. The annual expedition also contributes to the International Baccalaureate Diploma’s Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) module, which encourages students to take an active role in the local and global community. Chris Green, Assistant High School Principal at ACS Hillingdon and co-organiser of the expedition, commented: “Irrespective of what maintenance jobs we undertake the highlight of the trip each year is seeing the formation or growth in relationships between ACS Hillingdon students and the children at the orphanage. Seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter, and sensing the genuine warmth and kindness in their interactions is priceless.”
