Fifty five students from ACS Egham have recently celebrated the final year of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), by partaking in a Personal Project Display evening. Students in grade 10 complete a Personal Project at the end of the MYP; an extended piece of independent research showcasing all the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the programme. Students individually decide their project topic choice, which enables great scope for creativity and allows the project to be tailored to the students’ own passions and interests. The Display evening exhibits students’ projects to teachers, family, friends and the wider school community. This year, highlights included Alp Unver’s building of an electric ‘longboard’ (a type of skateboard); Martin Kopernicky’s invention of a new sport titled ‘Koperball’; and an ebook about the nature of different mental disorders that affect teenagers, written by Carie Ying Ng. Carie Ying Ng, commented: “Personal Project was a great way to finish the Middle Years Programme, since it allowed students to be creative and learn how to manage a long term project. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to choose my own topic that I was interested in and I decided to focus on mental disorders. Through completing this project, I was able to utilize the skills that I have developed over the past few years, as well as improving them- especially in researching and time management skills. Overall, the Personal Project was a great experience for an IB learner to improve skills.” As part of their project, students are also required to keep a process journal throughout, recording the skills developed on their Personal Project journey. Additionally, the students write a reflective report which details their achievements and challenges faced. Caroline Hazel, IB MYP Personal Project coordinator, commented: “As always, our students surprise and delight me with the originality and scope of their ideas. The projects created this year show clear evidence of the months of hard work that goes into the Personal Project. The Personal Project Display Evening is one of my favourite school events each year, as I have the opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary work our students are capable of.”
