Culford Pupils Head to Tenerife

Published Wednesday 9th of November 2016 11:35:01 AM

During the October half term, seven Culford divers along with pupils from the Spanish Department visited Tenerife for a fun-filled trip. Under the guidance of Mr Arbuthnot, Miss McCarthy and Mrs Waghorn, pupils enjoyed a week in the sun, improving their diving skills and exploring the island. For two of the Culford divers, this was their first experience of scuba diving. Three pupils purely dived for fun and the final two pupils, Leo and Gabriel Williams, completed their Rescue Diver course. Lots of Spanish was spoken by all involved and everybody successfully completed their qualification. Taking a break from diving, all pupils and teachers visited one of the best waterparks in the world, Siam Park, and braved rides such as the Tower of Power, The Dragon and the Mekong Rapids. One of the highlights included an 18m dive to see the Giant Atlantic Rays. However, this soon turned out to be the most memorable when it was interrupted by the unwanted attack from a male Barracuda! This small, but serious, incident allowed the pupils to put their lessons into practice. The boat signalled to the divers that they needed to resurface and all pupils were efficient in doing this as quickly as possible. First aid was given on the boat, with an ambulance waiting in the harbour. All involved recovered quickly to this rare incident. Overall, all pupils and staff enjoyed the experience, and the adventures. They have returned with memories that will stay with them forever and are looking forward to their next dive. The dive team are currently preparing for their next trip in April, which is to the island of Cozumel in Mexico.
