Students and staff at ACS Egham International School have been celebrating ‘International Mother Language Week’. Inspired by the UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day, which aims to promote different worldwide cultural and linguistic traditions, students and teachers at ACS took part in a series of ‘language swaps’. Jane Fox, Native Language Enrichment and Mother Tongue Co-ordinator, commented: “Over thirty different nationalities are represented across our school community and our annual ‘International Mother Language Week’ is an excellent opportunity for students to share and explore their different native languages with each other.” The language swap sessions ran every afternoon during the week with native speakers swapping phrases and traditions with their peers. In total students explored thirteen languages including Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, German, Dutch, Greek, Hindi, Mandarin, Russian, Norwegian, Japanese, Russian and Arabic. Jane added: “Over the course of the week, students also built a multi-lingual vocabulary wall which is being displayed in the Student Centre. By sharing different languages, students not only develop linguistic skills, but also develop a greater appreciation of diverse cultures and traditions.” As part of ACS Egham’s Native Language Enrichment programme, students for whom English is not their first language are offered extra-curricular classes to help maintain and develop their mother tongues.
