Feltonfleet pupils meet Double Olympic Champion Georgie Twigg MBE

The second Olympic Champion to visit Feltonfleet this year as part of the School’s “INSPIRE” programme, double Olympic Champion and multiple award-winning international hockey player, Georgie Twigg MBE visited children at Feltonfleet School, Cobham on Friday 9th June, when the athlete was Guest of Honour and keynote speaker at the School’s Annual Sports Review of the Year and Awards Dinner. After achieving victory in Rio, where she received an Olympic Gold as part of the Team GB Hockey squad (adding to the Bronze medal achieved in London’s 2012 games), Georgie, who plays for Surbiton Hockey Club, shared her experiences and provided advice in an inspirational closing speech. The audience included senior pupils who have represented the School at 1st team level this year, their proud parents and staff. During the dinner, Georgie presented Feltonfleet’s Sports Awards recognising the individual sporting achievements of the year. On attending the event she said, “I really enjoyed meeting all the young sports men and women at Feltonfleet. Their enthusiasm and passion was evident and I am sure they will all go on to achieve great things at their Senior Schools”. Year 8 pupils Finn and Olivia both received awards on the night. Finn, who achieved, Football Team Player of the Year said, “Georgie is such an inspiration and her speech was incredible. I loved the evening and it was even more special being a winner.” Olivia was awarded Netball Player of the Year and commented, “It was such an honour and privilege. I really didn’t expect to win and it was great meeting Miss Georgie Twigg”. Ed Smith, Feltonfleet’s Director of Sport, said, “We have had a fantastic year of sport and we are excited to have welcomed our second Olympic Champion to Feltonfleet within the space of 12 months. As an Olympic gold medallist in a team sport, Georgie embodies Feltonfleet’s sporting values – Participation, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Enjoyment - she will, no doubt, be a great inspiration to our children and support our mission to ‘create better athletes…..for life’.” Alastair Morrison, Headmaster, commented, “Girls’ sport at Feltonfleet is going from strength to strength. With the support of campaigns such as Sport England’s This Girl Can and visits from inspirational sportswomen like Georgie, our girls are aiming high”.
