ACS Egham students celebrate culmination of Middle School with annual student exhibition

Over 50 ACS Egham students, aged 15, celebrated the completion of their International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) studies with the annual student showcase. As part of their studies, students complete a 'personal project', independently researching a topic that they feel passionate about. Over the course of their final year studying the MYP, students complete a journal documenting their ideas, research and step-by-step achievements, as well as the challenges they have overcome to complete their projects. This year students chose projects which combined various aspects from across the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) spectrum. Alex, who has a passion for technology, built a 'smart mirror' which would display useful, personalised information, such as the weather, date and time, to viewers whilst getting ready in the morning and Scarlet investigated the impact music has on the brain during study and focus. Caitlyn designed a painless medical needle using biomimicry for doctors to use with their patients and importantly, examined its commercial viability and Ellen designed a special sensory room for people with Autism to help them feel more connected to society. Marie MacPhee, IB MYP Co-ordinator, commented: "The personal project is a wonderful opportunity for students to use all the skills they have developed throughout the MYP - creative thinking, organisation, research and an inquiring mind. Students become completely absorbed in a subject they love through the project and it is opportunities like this that will encourage a life-long zeal for learning." The annual exhibition marks the final step for the students' personal projects as they present their research and answer questions from parents, friends and teachers. Each personal project is assessed and forms part of the students' final grades for the Middle Years Programme. Marie adds, "I'm very proud of the sophisticated projects our students produced and marvel at the new skills they developed as a result."
