Haring to go - King Edward's Witley pupils create Luminous lepus

Published Monday 11th of June 2018 10:40:46 AM

Pupils of all ages from King Edward’s Witley collaborated to develop ‘Luminous Lepus’ - the School’s contribution to this year’s Haslemere Hares community arts project, an innovative project designed to promote the town and businesses of Haslemere through the powerful medium of art. Haslemere Hares follows last year’s successful Haslemere Hogs initiative, which raised £35,000 for local good causes; this year’s ‘Hares’ project hopes to raise even more money. As a sponsor of the Haslemere Hares fund-raiser, pupils were asked to decorate their very own fibre-glass hare under the guidance of Graduate Assistant Miss Annie Edwards. Taking full advantage of the extensive arts facilities at King Edward’s, pupils were encouraged to explore the use of technology and animatronics for their inventive entry, resulting in Luminous Lepus, a light emanating, fibre-optic hare. Luminous Lepus is a work in progress and plans are underway to enable glowing eyeballs and voice activated animation. After taking part in the parade of Hares around Haslemere, Luminous Lepus has been returned to King Edward’s where it will be displayed in the School’s Bunker Gallery as an art installation and supported by a video. Commenting on the project, Head of Art Mrs Caroline Shouksmith says, “We wanted to present our pupils with the opportunity to develop an exciting, contemporary multi-media response to this project, and they have engaged fully with this from the design stage right through to display. This has been a great opportunity to showcase the School’s art and design talents – whilst also playing a part in raising vital funds to support various charities in the local community. Now that the hare is back at KESW we will continue to develop the animatronics aspects with expertise from a team working in film special effects who will be delivering a seminar and workshop to help us to take the hare to the next level”
