It has been another excellent year at Canford for applications to university and other higher education courses through UCAS. The 136 applicants made 637 applications to university courses, receiving 547 offers, a return of 84%. This represents nearly 4 offers per pupil, with 86% of these from Russell Group/Sunday Times Top 12 institutions. Exeter tops the list of most popular university destinations this year with 23 offers accepted as Firm Choices, followed by Bristol (13 offers), Durham (9), Cardiff and Bath (7). Manchester and Warwick also feature highly. Taking the total to 90 places in the past decade, five pupils are heading to Oxbridge to read courses spanning Arts and Sciences – Economics/Business Management and Biology at Oxford, and Spanish/German, Law and Classics at Cambridge. Ten out of the twelve prospective Medics, Vets and Dentists have received at least one offer in this highly competitive process, continuing the school's strong record in this area with 118 offers in the past 10 years - an 80% application/offer success rate. Three pupils have successfully gained places on Art Foundation Courses next year at Bournemouth Arts University, with a further Canford artist taking up a place at Central St. Martin’s. In addition, congratulations go to Leo Bishop who has gained a coveted degree apprenticeship with PWC alongside a BSc degree course in Computer Science at Leeds University. This followed an intense selection process with 135 Sixth Formers applying for 35 places. Ben Vessey, Headmaster, commented: “In an increasingly competitive market, it is wonderful to see so many of our Upper Sixth gaining firm offers to their chosen universities, the vast majority among the top institutions in the country. I am also delighted with the range of courses selected, reflecting the breadth of higher education opportunities which continue to open up for young people. Of course, most offers are still conditional on summer examination results, and I wish all our Upper Sixth the very best of luck in the coming weeks, and for their exciting futures along whichever paths they choose. Like generations of Canfordians before them this year’s Upper Sixth have benefited from an outstanding all round education which has equipped them to step out and make their mark in the world.”
