A former Glenalmond College pupil from Perthshire has been awarded a First Class Honours Degree at Oxford University. Tobermory Mackay-Champion has achieved a First Class BA in Geology at University College, Oxford. He also won the AWE Geophysics Prize for best finals performance in Geophysics and Mathematics. Tobermory, who also attended Craigclowan Preparatory School in Perth, was Captain of College in 2016 where he achieved straight A*s in chemistry, maths, physics and geography A-levels. He is currently conducting primary research on the first fossil reptile, Hylonomus, estimated to be 315 million years old, and the tectonic evolution of Cornwall, and is planning to continue at Oxford next year to study for a Masters in Earth Sciences. Tobermory then plans to study for a PhD. Glenalmond Warden, Hugh Ouston, said he was delighted to hear of Tobermory’s success. “It is always rewarding to hear of former pupils’ success after they leave Glenalmond and huge congratulations from all at Glenalmond go to Tobermory on achieving a First from Oxford,” said Mr Ouston. “A huge part of what education at Glenalmond is all about is unlocking the individual potential of the young people in our care and preparing them for life after school and it is very rewarding for our staff to follow their former pupils’ progress in life, whatever direction they take, after leaving us.”
