Kingshott's 2011 South African Exchange

Published Friday 11th of November 2011 08:50:04 AM

Seven Year 8 children have undertaken this year's South African Exchange. They landed in Cape Town on Monday 9 October. They enjoyed a trip up Table Mountain, a launch to Seal Island and the all important morning in Khayelitsha Township, home to more than two million people. Apart from bracing swims in the cold Atlantic Ocean, the real treat was a visit to Robben Island, a penal colony which was home to Nelson Mandela for eighteen years. As you can imagine, it has huge political significance to all South Africans and a visit feels something like a pilgrimage. The children then made the short flight to Port Elizabeth where they spent two weeks with their hosts enjoying a southern hemisphere lifestyle.
