Congratulations to Old Swinford Hospital student William Croft who was placed runner up in the U16 Songwriting Category of The 2011 Brit Writers Awards Ceremony at Madame Tussauds, London in October.

This was William's first attempt at a writing competition and the judges were impressed with his piece entitled 'Mr Dr Tony B's Magical Musical Circus' and described his composition of lyrics and words as 'inspired and eccentric'. His category attracted over 1,000 entries and the overall Brit Awards 20,000.

Commenting on his success, OSH Head of Instrumental Studies Ms Anna Downes said 'Will is an extremely talented young composer and musician. I was impressed by this piece when he played it to me as it showed real originality and creative flair. He composed it at the start of Year 10 and he has developed greatly as a composer since then. Will is passionate about music, and has a promising musical career ahead of him. Well done Will!'

The Brit Writers Awards was established in 2009 and is an exciting initiative to encourage and inspire unpublished and self-published writers of all ages. It is the brainchild of Imran Akram, whose background is in education and training and wants to 'make writing cool' and to make the world of publishing more accessible to new writers.
Speaking about his success 15 year old William said: 'The whole experience has been fantastic from the composing, lyric writing and attending the awards at Madame Tussauds.'
