Devizes to Westminster 2010

Published Monday 3rd of May 2010 11:27:24 AM

125 miles, 77 portages, one race, with the finish line in Westminster and not a mention of a single MP, what a relief!

Many congratulations to the 10 Dauntsey's crews (nine double and one single) who successfully completed the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race over the Easter weekend.

The competitors (over 200 kayaks and canoes entered) set off on Good Friday morning from Devizes Wharf, amidst cold wind and rain. Battling exhaustion and all types of weather conditions, the race was a severe test of skill and stamina for all those who took part. Having camped for three nights, paddled 125 miles, completed 77 portages and endured numerous blisters, the crews passed under Westminster Bridge early on Easter Monday morning. The level of endurance and achievement in finishing this gruelling race (often known as the Canoeists' Everest) should not be under estimated, and all paddlers, and their tireless support crews of parents, friends, and family, are to be heartily congratulated.

Congratulations also to staff Miss Polly Sinnett-Jones and Mr Mark Ball who heroically completed the non-stop 24 hour version of the race in an impressive 22 hours 46 minutes.
