Sam Wyatt-Haines, from Blundells School, Devon, has held onto the title of National Fives Champion for the Under 16s for the second year. He was one of around 40 players entered for the Colts Singles in the Rugby Fives Association Schools National Championships this year. Sam was determined to keep his position as champion and entered the Nationals in a very focussed manner. On the first day, he played three group matches, winning against players from Tonbridge (11-0), Alleyns (11-3) and Derby Moor (11-0). This put him into the quarter-finals which in a masterful display he won 11-1 and 11-0 against a player from St Pauls. The semi-final was played the following day against a player from Sedbergh, which Sam won 11-2 and 11-3. This put him through to the final; after three days of playing fives, fatigue was beginning to set in and he knew it would be a tough match against Yul Kahn-Pascual (St Pauls). In a final described as of extraordinary quality and athleticism in the official report, Sam won 11-3, 9-11, 11-3 making him the U16 National Champion for the second successive year.
Blundell's is one of the oldest fives playing schools in the country, with records going back to 1625. The school has six Rugby Fives Courts and the game is still played throughout the year, although the majority of school fixtures take place during the Easter term.
