King's Bruton holds Careers Convention for students in Lower Sixth

King's Bruton held its fourth annual Careers Convention towards the end of the summer term, enabling students at the end of their first year of sixth form study to listen to inspiring career advice about a wide range of jobs ranging from banking, journalism and marketing to law, the Foreign Office and film making.

The key-note speech was given by Rachel Bell, the founder and managing director of PR agency Shine Communications, named the best employer in The Sunday Times. She told the students how she had left school at 16 with three GCSEs and, through hard work and gaining experience in different areas, had this year been named the best company leader in The Sunday Times the first woman ever to achieve this.

Other speakers included former Daily Express editor Richard Addis, currently Editor-in-Chief of The Day, an important on-line publication used by King's to help prompt debate on current affairs.

Students also heard from Andrew Curtis, film producer and founder of media law firm Drew and Co, who explained how his career in banking hadn't gone as expected, showing the importance of having a back-up plan. He now runs a successful law firm specialising in film.
