Pupils Program Automated Artworks

Published by Benenden School on Tuesday 11th of April 2023

Pupils recently programmed Sphero bots to create artworks for their Creative Technology lessons.

The hard work the Fourths (Year 7s) have put into learning to program their Sphero bots in their lessons finally paid off, as they took to the Science Atrium to create some large-scale abstract paintings.

The spherical moving robots were programmed to move in lines imitating Mondrian, circles imitating Kandinsky, or randomly in the likeness of Jackson Pollock. Pupils then doused them in paint and placed them on the giant makeshift canvas set up in the Atrium.

One by one, the pupils set their robots to choose one of the three artists to imitate at random, and then guessed at which had been selected from the trails of paint.
