> FACT 1:  The land that makes up Northallerton today was a gift from King William II to the Bishop of Durham in the 11th century.

> FACT 3: Northallerton has a rich religious history. Under the Bishop of Durham, Northallerton was the center for religious affairs in the region 

> FACT 4:  Northallerton was a central town for trade in the 13th century, being a key halfway point between London and Edinburgh. It developed quickly and was established as a market town in 1200 by Royal Charter.  

> FACT 5:  Northallerton has strong roman roots, recent archeological finds have discovered a Roman signal station on Castle Hills that connected Hadrian’s Wall and Eboracum.

However some historians believe it comes from the Alder trees growing in the nearby moors.
